This volume depicts eighteen chapters of the Filial Piety Sutra, with each paragraph on the right and the text on the left. Regular script transcribes scriptures. The characters are drawn in line drawing. The composition of the picture is symmetrical on the left and right, emphasizing the order of human relations. It is said that it was written by Li Gonglin. Li Gonglin (1049-1106) was a famous figure painter at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty. He was born in Shuzhou (Shucheng, Anhui). His name was Bo Shi. Li Gonglin’s “The Painting of Filial Piety”, originally a silk edition, is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This volume is slightly different from its style, but its composition and layout are similar, which can be regarded as a transfer of the filial piety painting by later painters.
