Bride’s cap, head-dress (a) made of silver (gilt), wire, enamel, pearls, feathers [kingfisher], beads (glass), coral. Band (b; for forehead?), pair of earrings (c-d) and pin (e).

Comments:Second of two Slips “7614” (Christy); (first is Samoan club). Slip: ‘Silver gilt cap, consisting of a wire frame attached in front to a broad perforated hoop embossed with foliage, having cappets at lower end. At back of this band and overlapping it is a band of birds over one of fern-like leaves; the rest of the crown is covered with flowers, fruit and leaves, medallions having Chinese inscriptions being intermixed. The whole composed of silver-gilt filigree, turquoise blue enamel, pearl, coral and pink glass beads. Row of filigree leaves round lower edge. A figure of bird and strings of pearl beands, with a few coral ditto, and filigree and blue enamel leaves depend over each ear. Diam. 9 in. H. 6 1/2 inches. See. G.F. Davis, The Chinese, 3 vols, 12, Lond. 1844. Vol. 1, p.268, “When the month after the marriage is over the bride’s friends send her a particular headdress.” He does not describe what the head-dress is like. Presd. by A.W. Franks Esq. [illegible].’ The original registration slip states that the blue areas are made of ‘turquoise blue enamel’; they are actually pieces of feather, possibly kingfisher feather.
