Description:
This brush rest was made in a two part mould and is in the form of a smiling scholar, seated on a rock. He is dressed in a black hat with trailing wings, round necked green robe, fastened with a belt, and black shoes. His left hand is concealed by the long flowing sleeves of his gown and in his right hand he holds a brush-pen which has been broken. Besides him on a flat rock is an inkstone wet with black ink and another pen resting on a mountain shaped brush-rest. Beyond this equipment on a further rock is a yellow basin containing a penjing (miniature world scene). The rock is pierced on both sides to evoke the naturally eroded rocks of Lake Taihu collected by discerning scholars. Neither the foot not the inside of the brush rest are glazed and the vertical joins on both sides are visible. The palette of black, amber and emerald green is typical of the famille verte palette of the Kangxi reign.
