Description:
Carved ivory box in the form of two peaches connected by a leafy branch with clinging monkeys. The box opens to reveal a linked chain, from which are suspended a miniature bell, a tiny peach container that opens to display a crouching monkey, and at the end two branches of chains to which clinging two monkeys, and a single monkey.

Comments:The ivory carving of this kind has been known as ‘devil’s work’. Qianlong emperor wrote the text to express his delight in the intricate carving and painstaking detail of ‘devil’s work’ done in the Ruyi Guan imperial workshop, saying ‘it is the devil [craftsman’s] hands that could transfer immortal’s intentions’.
