Description:
Round stoneware box and cover with moulded decoration, pale green and yellow glazes. The upper and lower sections of this box might appear to have been married together, but in fact may well have been intended to fit together as other boxes of this type have non-matching lids. Stylized lotus lappets are moulded around the outside of the tray, covered with an amber-yellow glaze. The moulded cover shows Han-style mythical beasts glazed in pale green, chasing each other around a central coin which has traces of red lacquer and gilding remaining. Both the cover and the tray are glazed inside.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The pinkish-beige low-fired body is typical of ceramics made for export at the Tiankeng kiln sites in Nansheng (see BM 1985.1119.9). A similar but slightly larger box, described in the excavation report as having a crab design on the lid, was excavated there. This box was collected by the donor in Sulawesi, Indonesia.A collection of boxes of this type in Japan has recently been published. It describes such boxes as ‘conversation pieces’ for the Japanese tea ceremony. Although none of them is identical to the present box, they are similarly moulded, glazed in the same palette and share certain features such as the petal-moulded tray or animal-moulded cover.
