Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1643 (circa)
Materials:stoneware, lacquer,
Technique:lead-glazed, moulded, lacquered,
Dimensions:Diameter: 6.50 centimetres Height: 3.50 centimetres
Description:
Covered round box with moulded decoration beneath a dark green glaze with traces of red lacquer. This round box of compressed form has a flat-topped cover. Its cover is moulded in relief with the character 禄 ‘lu’ in a double roundel and with four ‘ruyi’-shaped cartouches on a ground of tiny raised bosses around the sides with further bosses ornamenting the upper edge of the rim of the tray. It is covered inside and out with a much eroded dark green lead glaze and has traces of red lacquer remaining on the character. Originally this lacquer may have been further ornamented with gilt designs.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The character 禄 ‘lu’ has many meanings in English, including happiness, prosperity, official salary gift or favour. In addition to this box, other coloured boxes, decorated with different auspicious characters, were recovered from the Hatcher shipwreck. One of similar dimensions and design, bearing the character ‘shou’ [long life], was fitted with a bronze mirror. It is possible that the present box once contained a mirror that is now lost.
