Description:
Porcelain straight-sided bowl (zhi bi wan) with underglaze blue and overglaze enamels in ‘doucai’ style. This small straight-sided bowl has a narrow foot ring at the edge of the walls. Inside it is plain and outside it is decorated with four flower sprays, possibly hollyhocks, outlined in underglaze blue and filled in over the glaze with alternating yellow and coral-coloured blooms, with green foliage and brown stalks. The base bears a four-character Zhengde reign mark in a double ring.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Such small straight-sided bowls were first made in the fifteenth century. One with blue flowers but otherwise identical decoration is in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London. It is a particularly interesting example as it is marked with a Longqing over an original Chenghua reign mark.
