Description:
Porcelain bowl with slightly rounded sides, straight rim and high, straight foot. There are three phoenixes flying among peony scrolls in underglaze cobalt blue on the exterior, and a roundel containing a floral spray in a double ring in underglaze cobalt blue in the centre of the interior. There is an inscription on the base.

The base carries the inscription癸丑年造 (guizhou nian zao ‘made in the [cyclical] guizhou year’). Cyclical years occur every sixty years. Judging by the Jiajing style decoration and cobalt colour, this bowl should be dated equivalent to the year AD 1553.
