Ma Yuan (active in 1190-1224 AD), named Qinshan, was originally from Hezhong, Shanxi (now Yongji, Shanxi), and moved to Hangzhou. He served as a painter in the Guangzong and Ningzong dynasties (1190-1224 AD), and was good at painting landscapes, flowers and birds, and people, especially the most outstanding achievements in landscapes. He was as famous as Xia Gui, so he was called “Ma Xia”.
