Chinese people regard paired fish as a rebus (visual pun) for abundance as the words for both fish 魚 and abundance 餘, are pronounced yu. In the sixteenth century, mostly potters at Jingdezhen substituted underglaze copper-red with overglaze iron-red which was much easier to control and caused less wastage when completing imperial orders.
