Description:
Porcelain bowl with underglaze blue and polychrome enamels. This bowl has rounded sides, an everted rim and a slightly splayed foot ring. Inside a boy is shown wearing a long-sleeved robe, dancing in a garden. Around the rim is a red-and-green interlocking border of undulating trefoil points. Outside is a scene of the Eight Daoist Immortals visiting Shou Lao, the god of longevity, portrayed seated on the back of a flying crane and holding a ‘ruyi’ sceptre. The immortals progress in pairs towards him: first Zhongli Quan, holding peaches, and Zhang Guolao with his drum and sticks; then Lan Caihe and Han Xiangzi with his flute; next is Cao Guojiu with his castanets and Li Tieguai carrying the elixir of immortality in a double gourd; Lu Dongbin follows with his fly whisk and demon-slaying sword, turning back towards He Xiangu, the only female immortal, who brings up the rear gripping a lotus pod, and the end of the scene is indicated by a conventional bank of clouds. On the flawed base is a sketchily written six-character Chenghua reign mark in a double ring in underglaze blue. Further blue is used to emphasize the foot and rim with double lines.
