In the autumn of the third year of Yuanyou (1088), Mi Fu accepted the invitation of Lin Xi, an official of Huzhou (Wuxing, Zhejiang) (who was active in the second half of the 11th century), and wrote eight poems in various styles on the precious silk version “Shu Su” that Lin had collected for many years. Although this volume was written in the fence woven with black silk, it is a milestone for him to get rid of the influence of the ancients and form his own style of writing. Mi Fu (1052-1108) was born in Xiangyang (now Xiangfan, Hubei Province). He is also good at poetry, painting and calligraphy. He is rich in collection and fine identification. He, together with Cai Xiang, Su Shi and Huang Tingjian, is called the four greatest calligraphers in the Northern Song Dynasty.
