Period:Song dynasty Production date:10thC-13thC
Materials:jade
Technique:polished
Dimensions:Diameter: 8.50 centimetres
Description:
Bowl of semi-translucent green jade with brown veining and inclusions polished to a soft gloss.
IMG
Comments:Possibly 12thC-14thC. This carefully polished shallow bowl with curving sides has a pronounced groove just below the lip. It stands on a shallow foot. As the bowl does not resemble closely any distinctive type of ceramic, it is difficult to date. Some plain, undecorated bowls were made in the Song period and the present piece may possibly be of this date. A stem cup of the early Ming period in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, is made of a more cloudy stone and, like the present cup, is undecorated except for an incised line below the lip. The fully rounded bowl with gently upturned sides ends with a groove below the rim. The bowl stands on a low foot which has been chipped. Sung. Diameter 85mm.
