Comments:Possibly Song dynasty, 11thC-12thC. This circular cup with a rounded body is roughly carved with deeply scored lines to suggest a woven basket. A very neat band around the neck bears groups of small vertical lines, alternating with longer horizontal ones to suggest the ring around the top of a basket. The surface of the jade is polished to a soft gloss. The prototype for this jade, as for the 535 [2014,AsiaLoan,1.168], was probably a piece of gold or silver. A few silver bowls are known which, although a little wider at the mouth, are very similar to the present piece, even having a comparable design around the lip. These silver examples have been copied in white ceramic, especially Ding ware, as well as in jade. It is of course open to question whether the silver bowls are earlier than the jade; they are both certainly earlier than the ceramic. The shape of this jade bowl is rather unusual, even if it s based on a silver prototype. There may be an even older source in another material, glass. A shallow, faceted bowl, found in a Northern Wei tomb, has a regular pattern of wheelcuts that may have inspired the metalworker to create a new all-over pattern. Forgetting or ignoring the exact form of the glass, silverworkers perhaps made their silver bowls resemble something closer to home, namely a basket. However, the hardness of the jade basket returns it to the category of precious bowl in hard, shiny materials, which were the original sources of the jade bowls. See Rawson 1995, pp.391-392, cat.no.29.2. The bulbous basket deeply incised in a criss-cross pattern representing the weave of a basket and the straight rim of the basket tucked in with two bands and transverse grooves. Sung. Height 50mm 62mm.
