Description:
Front apron; part of woman’s wedding costume As.1998.1.140 to 142. Base cloth of hand-woven, hand-spun cotton dyed dark indigo with warp threads used as fringe. Ties hand-woven with warp stripes. Deocrated with rectangular block of decoration as sleeves on jacket As.1998.1.140. The wrap thread fringe threads are grouped together and wrapped with metal in two rows, with attached bundles of narrow strips of coloured silk felt.

Comments:Corrigan notes that aprons sit on the hips below the waist and fall just below the skirt. Above the aprons a woven waist tie is wound round the body.Text from Corrigan 2001: 58: kaili city area, qiandongnan prefecture. Festive Apron. Rectangular front apron with top ties set in from the side. The base cloth is hand-woven cotton dyed dark indigo, on to which a rectangular block of decoration has been sewn. This consists of numerous strips of different-coloured satins. Various coloured geometric motifs have been stitched on to each with a folded, wafer-thin, malleable ‘metal’ strip, also attached by stitching.
