“The Third Edition of the Pearl Forest” is the abbreviation of the Third Edition of “The Secret Palace Pearl Forest”. “The Secret Palace Zhulin” is a bibliography of Buddhist paintings and calligraphy collected in the Inner Government. In the ninth year of Qianlong’s reign (1744) and the eighth year of Qianlong’s reign (1793), there were first and second editions, respectively. During the reign of Jiaqing, over a thousand pieces of Chen Han from the four dynasties of Shun, Kang, Yong, and Qian that were not included in the previous and subsequent editions were collected, and over a thousand pieces of calligraphy and painting by the Emperor Jiaqing, advanced by his officials, and omitted from the old edition were compiled into the three editions of “The Secret Palace Pearl Forest”, which was completed in the 21st year of Jiaqing (1816). The usage of the various seals specified in the “General Rules” is as follows: “When you meet Lie Shengchen Han, the emperor’s imperial pen will use the ‘three editions of the Zhulin’… ‘hidden in the Zhulin in the Secret Hall’… all the two seals. Ancient and modern officials’ calligraphy and painting will use the ‘treasure of the Jiaqing imperial tour’… all the five seals will be added with the ‘three editions of the Zhulin’ to distinguish them from the continuation.” This is also a landmark seal for identifying the collection of calligraphy and painting in the Qing Dynasty
