The special chime is made of a whole piece of Xinjiang Hotan jasper. The quality of jade is pure, translucent and polished. The body of the chime is regular and flat, similar to a carpenter’s ruler, except that the angle of the sentence is an obtuse angle rather than a right angle. The long side of the chime is a drum, and the short side is a drum, which is referred to as “Gu Er Gu San” in the “Zhou Li Kao Gong Ji”. As a musical instrument belonging to the Stone of the Eight Tones, the special chime was also dedicated to the imperial music of the Qing Dynasty, and was a symbol of the status of the deities of heaven and earth and the supreme imperial power. When playing, for each sentence, hit the Bo bell first to announce its sound; At the end of a sentence, hit a special chime to receive the rhyme of a sentence, which is what Mencius called “golden sound and jade vibration.”
In the Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty, the special chime was also created by Emperor Qianlong in 1761, when he imitated the casting of the Bo bell. At that time, when making jade special chimes, it was necessary to send someone to Hetian, Xinjiang, to purchase jade materials and transport them to the capital for the emperor’s inspection. The music department presented the shapes and drawings to the Emperor Qianlong for approval. Then, it was sent to Suzhou jade craftsmen to polish them into artifacts, and finally transported them back to the capital for use. It is sincerely believed that they would travel thousands of miles without sacrificing heavy money.
