Yixing Kiln Purple Sand Carved with Gold Clay Painting Tea Cooking Drawing Title: Qianlong Imperial Poetry and Culture Holding Pot, Qing Dynasty Qianlong, 15.8 cm high, 5 cm calibre, 5.9 cm foot diameter
The pot body has a cylindrical shape, a short neck, a long curved flow, an ear shaped handle, and circular feet. Attached is an umbrella shaped cover with a treasure bead button on top. The whole body is coated with vermilion ceramic clothing on the yellow and pink sand mud, and from the wear and tear of its mottling, there are dots of pink tire mud visible. The belly of the pot is decorated with a rectangular opening with corners and inscribed with a seven-character poem written by Emperor Qianlong, “Cooking Tea in the Rain and Sleeping in the Study Room Have Works”: “The streams are misty with smoke, mountains and rain, and the living clothes are made of willow wind alone. The bamboo stove, the tea, the valonia, and the rice family calligraphy and painting will be different. When the pine wind blows, the fish’s eyes grow, and the three gorges in the middle of the river need not be distinguished. The fragrance of the poem is immortal, and the fragrance of the poem is imperceptible between the seats.” At the end of the sentence, the seal characters “Qian” in the circular seal body and “Long” in the square seal body are stamped. The other side is decorated with clay to draw a picture of tea cooking in the courtyard
During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, official kiln porcelain was commonly decorated with imperial poems. The content of the poems was mostly expressed by the Emperor Qianlong around the implements. The entire work integrates poetry, calligraphy, painting, and printing. This popular decorative content of official kilns is used in the production of purple sand ware. Samples are produced by the Inner Court Manufacturing Office and customized in Yixing. Among them, those that require painting and gold painting are fired with plain fetuses and sent to the palace for secondary processing, while those that are plain or printed are directly fired in Yixing. The verses and tea cooking drawings engraved on this pot have the typical characteristics of palace purple sand.
