Author’s note: “I have received an official order and have been honoured with the painting.” The lower seal is “I have received the official seal in white.”. Emperor Qianlong wrote a poem with the following inscription: “On the occasion of the Spring Festival at the end of the Guiwei period.” The following inscription is stamped with the seal of “Qianlong Chen Han” in white and the seal of “De Xiang Wai Yi” in Zhu Wenfang. “Guiwei” was the 28th year of Qianlong (1763), when Emperor Qianlong was 53 years old
The Emperor Qianlong in the picture has the characteristics of portrait painting, which should be the hand of Giuseppe Castiglione, with fine brushwork and vivid expression. The palace maids use thin, strong, light, and sharp lines to depict their graceful, graceful, and charming bodies. The trees are neatly and exquisitely carved, with meticulous brushwork, and have the characteristics of Song painting. The mountain stones are mostly rubbed with side edges, showing their sharp and rugged character and hard texture. “The numerous objects depicted in the painting are represented in different strokes and ink, which shows that Jin Tingbiao has a profound artistic background in the creation of landscapes, figures, and portraits, making him one of the most important palace painters of the Qianlong Dynasty.”
Emperor Qianlong, as a Manchu king who was in charge of the fate of the imperial dynasty, ordered court painters to draw many happy pictures of him dressed in ancient Han costumes, from which we can see his yearning for the happy and free life of Han literati. From the poem inscribed by Emperor Qianlong on the picture, it can be seen that this picture is “painted in the style of the Eastern Mountain in the Song Dynasty, and imitated by Liu Songnian of the Song Dynasty.”. The picture shows him sitting in a high-ranking suit and hat, leaning against the railing, and looking down at the rows of ancient women crossing the bridge, full of palace entertainment
