Qianlong Blue and White Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea Gourd Bottle, Qing Dynasty Qianlong, height 57.5cm, caliber 15.5cm, foot diameter 21cm
The bottle is in the shape of a gourd, with a skimmed mouth, a short straight neck, and rounded feet that are outwardly skimmed. The interior is painted with white glaze, and the exterior wall is decorated with blue and white flowers. The neck is symmetrically arranged with Kui Feng ears, painted with Ruyi cloud patterns, Yingluo patterns, banana leaf patterns, and echo patterns. The upper abdomen is painted with auspicious cloud bat patterns, and the lower abdomen is painted with the theme pattern “Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea”. The Eight Immortals, dressed in rosy clouds and stepping on auspicious clouds, roamed the sea. The vase feet are painted with four bat patterns on the brocade ground. Apply white glaze inside the ring foot. On the outsole, there are six characters and three lines in blue and white seal script “made in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty”
Because the sound of “gourd” is similar to that of “blessing”, the gourd bottle implies “blessing”. The gourd bottle is a common shape in porcelain during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This device is equipped with a pattern of eight immortals, symbolizing “Eight Immortals Blessing”.
