Red Sea Beast Chart Round Box

[Carved Red Sea Beast Chart Round Box]

Carved Red Sea Beast Chart Round Box, with a height of 6cm and a diameter of 15cmbox is composed of two identical parts. Outside the box, there are red lacquer carvings of falling flowers and flowing water, and several sea animals are playing in the rolling waves, vividly portrayed. The inside of the box is painted with black light paint, and in the center of the cover is a knife engraved gold regular script with three lines and six characters, “Made in the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty.”
This box is carved with exquisite craftsmanship and ripples like silk. When removed with one knife, no traces of damage are visible, demonstrating a new style of lacquer carving during the Qianlong period. There are two reasons for the formation of this style. One is influenced by the style of Jiajing and Wanli carved lacquers in the late Ming Dynasty, which were sharp and deep, and the sword did not hide its edge. The other is that the “tooth work” craftsman was used in the carved lacquers at this time. According to records, in the early years of Qianlong’s reign, there was no carving craftsman in the “lacquer work” of the manufacturing office, so the emperor ordered a famous southern bamboo carving craftsman who was on duty at the “tooth work” of the manufacturing office to engage in carving lacquer. For example, on October 14th of the third year of Qianlong’s reign, the message was: ‘If the lacquer box is properly painted, it will be handed over to the tooth craftsman for carving.’ “. This kind of lacquerware carved with bamboo carving techniques naturally brings the unique, fresh, delicate and dense style of southern bamboo carving to the lacquer carving, making the lacquer carving during the Qianlong period show the beauty of sharp edges, deep edges, and precise and powerful edges. This round box with a sea animal diagram is almost impeccable in its carving. According to the records of the Qing Dynasty Palace Fabrication Office, the production of this box took a total of one and a half years, which shows the huge labor and time consumption of this carved lacquer work
