[Clear Green and Color Zhangguo Laodu Chart Peach Box]
Clear Green and Color Zhangguo Laodu Chart Peach Box, mid Qing Dynasty, 7 cm high, 13 cm calibre. The old collection of the Qing Palace
This peach shaped box is carved with green paint to adorn the surging sea, with red petals rolling with the waves. The box cover is decorated with a carved red lacquer carving, and Zhang Guolao rides a donkey with a whip and steps in front of the waves. The method is to first paint with green paint to carve waves, then remove all the green paint from the contours of humans, animals, and petals according to the design, and then fill in the red paint and carve the patterns of immortals riding donkeys, and petals. Therefore, the red and green colors are distinct, with a relief effect. The details of the characters and livestock are all carved with a knife after coloring, which is smooth and smooth. The donkey’s mane is vertical, as thin as a hairline, and its four hooves soar in the air, giving a sense of galloping movement, and is exquisite
The motif of this box is derived from the myth and legend of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea. The design of the utensil table adopts the method of partial color addition, which is referred to as “pile color” in the “Xiu Shi Lu”, and the distinctive color contrast makes the performance of the theme more prominent.
