[Jade Carved Yunlong Incense Tube]
Jade Carved Yunlong Incense Tube, clear, 76.4 cm high, 12.8 cm in diameter × 12.9 cm
The incense cylinder is composed of three parts, with a copper gilded pavilion type roof on the upper part, a jasper cylinder in the middle, carved with cloud and dragon patterns on the upper part, and a copper based Xumi type base on the lower part. The incense tubes are a pair placed on the left and right sides in front of the throne. Whenever the emperor ascends to the throne, sandalwood is lit in the incense barrel, and cigarettes emerge from the holes in the incense barrel, creating a mysterious atmosphere of burning cigarettes and pleasant aroma. The ministers under the throne smell the aroma, which is a metaphor for the majesty of the emperor’s grace and the meaning of the people. In the archives and documents of the Qing Dynasty, this device is often referred to as the “Hangen Incense Tube”.
