  • Description:
The Duke of Gun is Yan Hui, the highest disciple of Confucius. This is the posthumous title given back to him during the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty. In order to avoid the taboo of Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty, the inscription changed Yan Hui’s character Ziyuan to Ziquan. According to the inscription, Li Tingxiao, the governor of Qufu County, ordered Zhang Zhihong, the county magistrate of Qufu, to write a composition on the ground that King Xuan (Confucius) had been remembered, but Lord Gun had not been praised. Bao Wen should write it and build the monument in the first year of Tianbao (742). The inscription is clerical script, while this article is regular script. Before the Ming Dynasty, the lower part of this tablet was buried in the soil, so there was a word or two missing in each line of the old extension. The original tablet is now hidden in the Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong Province. Bao Wen’s life is unknown.
