Gongga Nyingpo (1092-1158), the son of Gongche Jiebao, the founder of the Sakya sect of Tibetan Buddhism, studied Buddhist scriptures with his father when he was young. After his father died at the age of 11, he learned Buddhism from Paki translators and others. He absorbed the advantages of various explicit and secret teachings and gradually formed a complete set of “Daoguo teaching methods”, which played a great role in the systematization of the Sakya sect’s teachings. Therefore, the people of the Sakya faction respectfully called him “Sakhin” (meaning the master of the Sakya faction) and honored him as the first ancestor of the Sakya. Gongganingbu was appointed as the host of the Sakya Temple at the age of 20, lasting for 47 years
The Thangka is decorated with gold satin, which is very gorgeous. The picture is set in the Sakya Temple. Gongganing cloth is sitting on the throne with folded hands, with the left hand giving the vow seal and the right hand holding the lotus. At the top left of the picture is the statue of Xi Vajra, which he practiced, at the top right is Piloba, the eighty-four great achievements of India, and at the bottom right is the Dharmapala Mahakali. On the back, there is a white damask sign, which is inscribed in four-body Chinese, Manchu, Mongolian and Tibetan in ink. The Chinese text is: “On the sixth day of March of the 26th year of Qianlong’s reign, the emperor ordered Zhang Jiahu Tuktu to recognize the origin and development of the Dalai Lama. The third from the right”.
