[Copper plated octagonal vertical watch horizontal sundial]
Copper plated octagonal vertical watch horizontal sundial, made in France in the 18th century, with a dial length of 6.2 cm and a width of 5.8 cm. The old collection of the Qing Palace
The copper plated octagonal vertical watch is a horizontal sundial with time lines and Roman numerals engraved along the circumference of the dial. A compass is set at one end of the plate, and a triangular dial is set at the other end. The surface of the dial needle is carved with rolled grass patterns, and a horizontal pigeon is attached below it. The arc side of the dial needle is carved with latitude arc, and the upper part is carved with 30o-50o, indicating that this sundial is suitable for time measurement in areas within 30o-50o north latitude
When in use, the compass determines the north and south, then adjusts the position of the dial needle (that is, point the tip of the pigeon’s mouth to the corresponding degree on the arc side according to the geographical latitude of the time measuring point), and finally sees the time indicated by the sun shadow on the time dial
This is a sundial with a horizontal device. Because the dial needle has a latitude carved on it and a small pigeon that can move up and down, it skillfully uses the tip of its mouth to point to the latitude. Compared with the general horizontal sundial, it expands the time measuring area and has the function of a public dial
The sundial is equipped with a small box with a sharkskin surface and dark green velvet lining, which is not only conducive to safety protection, but also convenient to carry around
