Liao Dashuexue Temple Statue Axis

[Liao Dashue Statue Axis]

The Statue of Snow Nunnery Axis, Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, Liao Dashue Painting, paper, color, 115 cm vertical, 26 cm horizontal

The picture shows an old man standing with a bamboo stick, without background. The inscription on the right side of the picture reads: “The first moon was written at Fuchun Hall in May. Liao Dashou, the younger brother of Fujian Province,” with two seals of “Dashou” and “Junke”. The upper part of this picture has one title of Da Chongguang, and the lower part of the picture has two titles of Zhang Xiaosi and Charles. The “Jiachen” in the paragraph should be the third year of Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1664)

There are many similarities between this work and Zeng Jing’s work. In a vertical picture, the artist only arranges the characters in the lower part of the picture without any background and props, which is the same form as Zeng Jing’s works such as Zhao Shie, Li Zui Ou and Zhang Qingzi. The title of the small regular script in this work is similar to Zeng’s work. The face of the figure is the focus of the artist’s performance, which is based on Zeng’s painting method, and is meticulous and vivid. Therefore, this painting has the representative characteristics of the Portrait of “Boschen School”

From the perspective of image, the figure in the picture, Xue An, is now a senior citizen. There is no more information recorded on the picture about his situation. Xue An should be the name of this person. According to the investigation, there were Xu Nanfu, Chen Can, Le Chun and other people who participated in the Snow Nunnery in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Among them, the activities of Xu Nanfu and Chen Can seem to be a little early. They are all Wu people, and there is a possibility that the Liao family can paint for them. Le Chun is a native of Fu Jianren, who lives in the same hometown as Liao. From the poem in the painting, we can see that the figure is a scholar. Therefore, the image of Le Chun is more likely. I record here for future inspection
