The Painting of Cultivation, also known as the Painting of Sacred Merit, is a work with the nature of enlightenment and education. It was painted in the Ming and Qing dynasties. This album has 10 pages in total, and the content of the picture is the story of the wise monarchs of the past dynasties. Zhang Ruoai wrote the text corresponding to the story for each pair of questions. The combination of the two can serve the educational purpose of learning from history and educating people
Although this volume is a figure painting, the pavilions and palaces as the background account for a considerable proportion. It is not difficult to see the impact of western techniques on painters. The drawing method of the building appropriately borrows the focus perspective method, and tries to show the light and dark relationship of the components with the depth of halo in the color setting, highlighting the three-dimensional sense of the building. As a whole, the composition, lines and colors of the works are not free from the color boundary painting system of Qiu Ying, a painter of the Ming Dynasty. The paintings have more decorative colors and plane sense, and are still insufficient in expressing the volume sense of the building and the texture of the building materials.
