The four screens have their own titles respectively: “Bright moon in spring”, “flat stream and waterfalls”, “thousands of pines and emeralds”, “flat hills and bright snow”, and the payment is signed with “Yuan Yao’s painting on the Han Dynasty in the middle of the summer of 1898.” The seal is “Yuan Yao” and “Zhao Dao”
This group of painting screens is Yuan Yao’s work in his later years. The paintings are four scenic spots in the northern suburbs of Yangzhou, all of which are sketches from life. “The bright moon on the spring stage” paints a delightful spring color, with fresh green branches on the lakeside, weeping willows leaning on it, delicate and beautiful strokes and elegant colors. “Advection and Waterfall” is painted with high trees and thick shade in summer, luxuriant and luxuriant, dotted with thick ink, and moist. “Ten thousand pines and emerald trees” means bleak autumn. The composition is flat and clear. The distant mountains and rocks are sketched with a simple pen. The trees are sparse. Only evergreen pine trees are still emerald. “Pinggang Yanxue” depicts the snow covering the land in winter, and the old plum is independent and unrestrained. The branches and trunks are skillful and vigorous, and then colored with rouge and white powder. The painter placed the pavilions, pavilions, famous gardens and scenic spots on both sides of the Thin West Lake in the nature of spring, summer, autumn and winter, and vividly displayed the prosperous scene of Yangzhou at that time, “two banks of flowers and willows are all by the water, all the way to the mountains”, with the exquisite techniques of traditional painting.
