The wine used by the court comes from the brewing in the palace and the local tribute. In case of major events in the palace, many famous wines from different places will be sent to the palace. Yellow rice wine is mainly produced in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, of which Shaoxing rice wine is the most famous. At present, the Palace Museum still has four jars of yellow wine preserved in the Qing Dynasty
These yellow rice wines have not been opened yet. The wine jars are all red. Due to the long history, the color has gradually changed to dark red. The jars are painted with dragon and phoenix patterns, implying the meaning of “dragon and phoenix are auspicious”. Both the jar body and the clay seal are written with the word “happiness”. These yellow wine should have been donated to the palace by Zhejiang during the wedding of Emperor Guangxu. From the perspective of the production technology of wine jars and the painting techniques of patterns, it should belong to the late Qing Dynasty.
