The inscription on this page reads: “Song Valley Gao Shi Tu. The Xinchou autumn day is the 60th birthday of Mr. Geng An’s president, and his younger brother Wang Shimin.” The seal is “Wang Shimin’s seal”, “Xilu Old Man”, and “Xitian” Zhu Wenyin. The collection includes: “Yinbei collection”, “ink margin in pot”, “Laichen heart appreciation”, and “Xuzhai approval”
“Xinchou” is the 18th year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1661), when Wang Shimin was 70 years old
According to the title, this picture was made by the author to wish his friend Jin Junming (Geng An) his 60th birthday. Therefore, the mountains, pines and cypresses with the meaning of longevity are particularly highlighted in the picture, so as to express their good wishes to wish their friends “longevity”. The rocks and trees in the picture are touched with skillful brush and ink, and they are pure and elegant in the green and thick. They have the charm of “plain and naive” of Dong Yuan and Huang Gongwang, and are typical of Wang Shimin’s landscape paintings in his later years
