[Stone Tao Plum and Bamboo Painting Volume]
Plum and Bamboo Painting Volume, Qing Dynasty, Stone Tao painting, paper book, ink pen, 34.2 cm vertically and 194.4 cm horizontally
This self-titled five-character rhythmic poem was signed with the following words: “In the spring of Bingxu, we got a volume of Song Luowen paper, six unofficial books” Chant of Plum Blossoms “, and ten five-character” Write Plum Blossoms “. The Qing and Hunan people were like Da Di Zi.” The seal was “Chi Jue” Zhu Wenyin, “Ruo Ji” Bai Wenyin, and “Ling Ding Lao Ren” Zhu Wenyin
“Bingxu” was the forty-fifth year of Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1706), when Shi Tao was about 66 years old
According to the author’s title, this picture uses Luowen paper of the Song Dynasty. The author first inscribed poems on the paper, and then painted plum and bamboo to match the poems. The organic combination of poetry and painting not only adds the book flavor of literati painting, but also shows the author’s poetic skills and exquisite calligraphy skills beyond painting. The plum bamboo painted in the picture is either sketched with a thin brush or carved with a wide brush. The lines are beautiful and clumsy in the combination of square and round. Its diverse brushwork and vigorous application of ink on the half-cooked paper have achieved a moist and indelible ink effect, which can be called Shi Tao’s masterpiece of freehand brushwork in his later years.
