[Wang Hui Mountain Window Reading Map Axis]
Mountain Window Reading Map Axis, painted by Wang Hui in the Qing Dynasty, paper version, light color, 160 cm vertically and 42 cm horizontally
The whole picture is composed in a high and distant way. White clouds, waterfalls and pavilions are interspersed among the mountains of trees, creating a magnificent and gloomy landscape. At the lower right of the painting, there is a person reading by the window in the cottage. Although this scene accounts for a small proportion in the painting, it highlights the theme of “reading by the mountain window” and adds a book atmosphere to the mountain forest scenery. From the signature, we can see that this picture is made to congratulate our friend Wang Shan (with the word “Zao Ru”) on his hard study in the cold window and his success in the autumn test. It has a strong emotional color. The whole picture is portrayed with the meticulous and complicated strokes of Wang Meng of the Yuan Dynasty. The lines are vivid but not disorderly, and the principle is in it. The thick and light ink colors are well arranged in the overlapping texture. This painting is an elaborate work by Wang Hui who imitated Wang Meng’s painting style in his early years
The signature of the payment: “The picture of reading in the mountain window. I am pleased to receive the autumn recommendation from Mr. He Suoru. It was on September 9, the afternoon of the seventh lunar month, when Wang Hui of Yushan was born.” The seal of “Wang Hui’s seal” and the seal of Zhu Baiwen were stamped
“Bingwu” is the fifth year of Kangxi (1666), when Wang Hui was 35 years old
