This is a group of works showing the daily life of Emperor Yongzheng, which are arranged in the order of 12 months in spring, summer, autumn and winter, and are respectively “watching lanterns in the first month”, “hiking in February”, “appreciating peaches in March”, “drinking wine in April”, “boating in May”, “enjoying the cool in June”, “begging for luck in July”, “appreciating the moon in August”, “appreciating chrysanthemum in September”, “painting in October”, “meditating in November” and “appreciating snow in December”. Judging from the scenery depicted, the object of expression should be the Yuanmingyuan. The picture is mainly composed of mountains, rivers and pavilions. The architectural description is exquisite, including both Chinese garden buildings, western pavilions and pavilions, and a combination of Chinese and Western styles. The landscape of the picture may be created by the painter combining his own imagination with the architecture of the Summer Palace. The Yuanmingyuan is a gift given by Yongzheng when he was the prince. He explained that the name of the “Yuanmingyuan” has profound meaning: “It is round and entrant, it is the time of a gentleman; it is bright and shining, and it is the wisdom of a wise man.” After the new Yuanmingyuan was built in August of the third year of Yongzheng (1725), Emperor Yongzheng often lived in the garden and handled official business here. He told all officials that “daily political affairs are the same as in the palace”. These 12 happy pictures show the various scenes of his life in Yuanmingyuan, and also show the different festivals and customs for 12 months.
