Chen Zhuo’s paintings of pavilions have two styles: cyan and light crimson. The former is used to depict the fairyland pavilions, and the latter is more realistic. This volume depicts the old capital of the previous dynasty. One shows the Temple of Heaven in the Ming Dynasty, and the other shows a bird’s eye view of Jinling City from the Qingliang Mountain. The subject matter of the painting expresses the painter’s yearning for his hometown. The whole picture organically combines the painting of pavilions with the shallow red landscape of literati, and the artistic conception is quiet and cold. The architectural image is basically hand-drawn, which is not only accurate and delicate, but also has the spirit of literati’s freehand brushwork, which shows the painter’s superb realistic ability. This painting is an empirical study of the original form of the Temple of Heaven architecture and the appearance of Jinling in the early Qing Dynasty.
