[Yinzhen Traveling Music Album · Lama Clothes]

Yinzhen Traveling Music Album · Lama Clothes page, Qing Dynasty, silk edition, colored, 34.9 cm vertical and 31 cm horizontal
This is one of a set of thirteen pages. This picture depicts the image of Emperor Yongzheng dressed in Lama costume, reflecting the Buddha worship of Emperor Yongzheng
Emperor Yongzheng talked about Buddhism all his life, and compared himself to the “Buddha”. He was a fanatical Buddhist believer. He was familiar with Buddhist classics since childhood. Before his accession to the throne, he held a Dharma meeting in the royal palace to practice meditation and Tibetan Buddhism secret methods. He was instructed by the master of meditation, Jialing Xingyin, Hongsu and II Zhangjia, and proved himself to a very deep level. After his accession to the throne, he organized a Dharma meeting in the palace and practiced Zen with his trusted minister and prince Hongli (later Emperor Qianlong). He often boasted of “being the emperor and preaching the heart of Buddha”. He has the closest relationship with the second Zhang Jia. He also received his guidance and has the feeling of being a teacher and apprentice. After the death of Zhang Jia in the second world, Emperor Yongzheng sent the reincarnated child to Beijing for training, and asked him to have a classmate with the prince Hongli. This portrait of Emperor Yongzheng sitting in a cave in the guise of Lama Buddha can reflect his feelings for Tibetan Buddhism.
