Weide Auspicious Mother of Heaven Thangka, 18th century, Beijing, painted in ink, 185 cm high, 100 cm wide, 120 cm vertical and 70 cm horizontal
The auspicious heavenly mother is angry, red-haired, wearing five skull crowns, gnawing teeth and rolling tongue, hanging a large wreath of human head, with a snake as the arm. The right hand holds the diamond pestle, and the left hand holds the gabala bowl. There is a ghost card on the waist, and the mule under the seat is hung with a disease bag and a pair of dice, and gallops in the sea of blood. The upper bound is the three supreme gods of the Gelug Sect, namely the Great Vajra, the Dense Vajra and the Shangle Vajra. Surrounded by the goddess of the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter, as well as the five long-lived Tianmu and the goddess of the twelve Danma
This Thangka is painted in cinnabar on the black ground, which is also the “Black Tang” painting method. The upper part is inscribed with the poem “Weide Auspicious Heavenly Mother”, which was written by the Emperor Qianlong in four characters of Han, Manchu, Mongolian and Tibetan
The back of the portrait is pasted with a white silk label, which is inscribed in four characters of Han, Manchu, Mongolian and Tibetan in ink, The Chinese text reads: “On September 20, the forty-third year of Qianlong’s reign, a decree was issued to hand over the Zhangjiahu Tuke map to offer a respectful portrait of Weide auspicious Heavenly Mother, Lamadi animal statue Dharma protector, lion statue Dharma protector, four auspicious Heavenly Mother, five long-lived Heavenly Mother, twelve eternal Dharma protectors, and so on.”
