“Dai” in the picture name refers to Mount Taishan Mountain in the middle of Shandong Province. The Painting of Visiting Monuments at Dailu has 24 volumes in total. It depicts Huang Yi’s visit to the monument from Jining to Mount Taishan in the second year of Jiaqing (1797) in the Qing Dynasty in the form of left text and right pictures. According to the author’s own postscript, one part of the album records the inscriptions on Mount Taishan, such as “Daiding”, “Kaiyuan Cliff Grinding Stele”, “Shijing Valley”, “Wangmu Pool”, etc., and the other part records the inscriptions seen by the author on the way back and forth, such as “Daming Lake”, “Mencius Temple”, “Confucius Forest”, “Confucius Temple”, “Dawenkou”, etc. In addition, the author also introduces the specific situation of the inscription in the postscript, which provides information for future research
Huang Yi devoted his whole life to the study of epigraphy and stone tablets. He once looked around for the surviving broken steles and systematically collated and recorded them, which played a positive role in the development of traditional epigraphy in China. What is different is that he personally recorded the process of each visit to the ancient monument with a paintbrush and painted many works, which were widely praised by the artists at that time. Throughout the whole album, the author adopted two kinds of Chinese painting techniques, ink and light crimson, but the artistic style presented is unified. Specifically, he pays attention to the discontinuity and transition of the lines, and describes the scenery around the site of the inscription with thick strokes and short lines, which makes the picture simple, the artistic conception secluded and quiet, and has a dull and naive artistic interest.
