The Wanzhong Map of the Autumn Mountains, painted by Wang Hui in the Qing Dynasty, in silk, with colors, 117.5 cm vertically and 53.3 cm horizontally
The painter at the top left of this painting wrote a seven-character quatrain with the following words: “Imitate Huang Zijiu’s style of Qiushan, in the August of Geng Chen, Wang Hui of Haiyu. The Mid-Autumn Day was heavily stained and sent to Emperor Xi Daoweng. Hui Youzhi.” The seal of “Wang Hui”, “nine out of ten years old”, “Geng Yan Wai Shi”, “Qinghui Old Man”, and “Chenghuai”. This painting was painted by Wang Hui in the thirty-ninth year of Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1700). It was painted by Huang Gongwang, a famous painter of the Yuan Dynasty, at the age of 69. It can also be seen from the caption that the painting was completed in early August, and was given to friends after being repainted on the Mid-Autumn Festival. The collection is printed with “Dr. Zhang Qinglian’s collection in Yushan” and “Chen’s family collection”
The picture depicts the late autumn scenery around Yushan Mountain in Changshu, and the state is very quiet. The painter’s seven character quatrain, “The mountains are thousands of heavy in autumn far and near, and I want to pick hibiscus when I’m drunk. Where does the peak sing to hide? It’s so difficult to meet Danqiu”, makes the picture more poetic and picturesque. Wang Hui’s paintings follow Huang Gongwang, but are not limited to one style. His landscape painting skills are profound, and his archaic paintings are very similar, and his sketches are also innovative, and he has the reputation of “integration”. Although this painting is for entertainment, it has no sloppy habits. The painting method is slightly similar to Huang Gongwang’s light red landscape. The ink is exquisite and exquisite. The picture is full of ancient flavor, but it does not lose its own appearance. Wang Hui is a painter with a long life and many creative achievements. His landscape paintings have changed in three phases: early, middle and late: before the age of 35, it is early, mainly imitating ancient paintings, and the ink is still immature; From the age of 35 to 60, it is the middle term. It draws on the strengths of various schools in the north and the south. It has diverse features and excellent writing skills, and is known as “the first in the world”; After the age of 60, the technique is more sophisticated, but the writing and composition often form a certain format, which is not as vivid and colorful as the middle stage. Wang Hui once said that landscape painting should “use Yuan people’s brush and ink to convey Song people’s gullies, and use Tang people’s charm to achieve great success”. This painting reflects his view of painting
This painting was transferred by Professor Zhang Qinglian of Peking University in 1998 and purchased by the Palace Museum.
