[Shi Tao Hengtang Trailing Footprint Axis]
Hengtang Trailing Footprint Axis, Qing Dynasty, Shi Tao’s painting, paper, ink, 131.4 cm vertically and 44.2 cm horizontally
This self-titled seven-character poem is signed with the following words: “Qing Xiang Dadi old man helps Guangling under the tree. The seal includes: “Sun Yufeng’s Treasure Seal”, etc., totaling 8 sides
The picture depicts the scene of Gao Shi dragging his staff to walk alone by the bank of Shulin Lake. The scenery setting takes the “S” shaped lake embankment as the main line. Through the concrete description of the trees and stones in the close view, the illusion of the distant mountains and flat lakes is set off. The picture space is “close to a thousand miles” in the mutual reflection of the virtual and real scenery. The mountains, stones and miscellaneous trees in the painting are expressed in moist ink, which is vivid and shows the author’s strong ability to control the pen and ink. This picture is not a realistic sketch, but a portrait of the ravine in the author’s chest after “searching all the strange peaks and making a draft”. It is unique and natural.
