On the edge of the frame is the inscription of Marquis Takano: “The portrait of Mr. Xia Zhongsheng. Xia Zhongsheng, whose birth and death are unknown, is named Ding, whose name is Zhongsheng, and he is a Gongsheng in Qiantang. He served as the instructor of Ningbo government school. His character is firm and resolute, and he likes to learn work books. The picture shows Xia Zhongsheng sitting in the waterside pavilion and reading a book. The face of the figure is painted with light color halo, and the depiction is detailed and vivid, showing the painter’s thoughtful and worried attitude. Green bamboo and beautiful wood are painted on both sides of the waterside pavilion, which not only enrich the picture and make the composition fuller, but also create a poetic and picturesque environment with waterside pavilion, white clouds, and clear streams, reflecting the painter’s elegant life interest
