[Preface to the Lanting of Zhuda running script]
Preface to the Lanting axis, Qing Dynasty, Zhuda running script, paper version, running script, 174.5 cm vertically and 52.1 cm horizontally
This axis is Zhu Da’s excerpt “Preface to the Orchid Pavilion”, with some slight differences in content. For example, the word “the beginning” is omitted after “late spring”, and the word “here you” is written as “here you”
The signature of the payment: “Badashan people”, with the white square seals of “in Fushan room” and “Badashan people” under the payment. The first seal is “Yellow Bamboo Garden” in white
In the lower left corner of this picture, there is a seal of Zhang Daqian with the white square of “Hidden Daqian”. The external signature is Zhang Daqian’s title: “The people of the Eight Mountains are near the Lanting. The Great Wind Hall is always supported.” The next seal is “Daqian”, Zhu Fang and other two seals. I know that this axis was once the old collection of Zhang Daqian. There are three inscriptions and postscripts on the left side of the frame, and the first postscript is stamped with “Kui Wen calligraphy and painting gold and stone” Zhu Fang
Badashan people are the nickname of Zhu Da, a famous calligrapher and painter in the Qing Dynasty. In his middle and late years, Zhu Da used “Eight Mountain People” in the collection of paintings and calligraphy works until his death. The scroll of this running script is not simply a temporary writing and imitation of the Preface to the Orchid Pavilion, but a combination of the author’s creation. It inherits the style of Badashan people’s “simple, mellow and self-styled”. As commented by postscript, it is “round and strong, ancient and thick, dedicated center, such as printing clay, such as drawing sand, cloth and white branches, with natural charm”, which can be called its frank work
