Paper astrometer

[Paper astrometer]

Paper astrometer, clear Guangxu, 52.2 cm in height, and 31 cm in diameter of the horizon. Made in Hunan. The old collection of the Qing Palace
There are black painted stars and their names on this celestial instrument. These stars are marked according to their grades (first to sixth), and are marked with the names of the three walls and twenty-eight constellations
This astrometer was made by Yang Renshan in Changsha, Hunan. The design adopts equatorial coordinates and is equipped with square wooden seats, which reflects that the traditional cosmology of “round sky and round place” still had a place until the late Qing Dynasty, thus it can be seen that the theory of “round earth” in modern western learning has not been widely used in China
The part south of the equator of the celestial sphere is painted with the instructions for manufacturing the celestial sphere
