In the second year of Emperor Yongzheng’s reign (1724), Emperor Yongzheng decided to expand the Yuanmingyuan, which had been built since the reign of Emperor Kangxi. During the continuous large-scale expansion of the Yongzheng and Qianlong dynasties, Lang Shining, who was familiar with Western architecture, participated in the design and engineering supervision of the famous “Western Building” in the park with French missionaries Jiang Youren and Wang Zhicheng, and had the opportunity to live in this famous eastern garden for a long time, and painted many works for the decoration of the hall, including European style oil paintings, There are also “line drawings” that show far-reaching effects on the plane with the European focus perspective
Although these works of Lang Shining in the Yuanmingyuan have long been obliterated due to the disaster of war, we can still see the superb attainments and achievements of Western palace painters such as Lang Shining in the palace architectural paintings from this volume of copperplate group paintings. This group of completely western-style copperplate paintings has also become the representative of the new techniques of the court architectural painting in the Qing Dynasty.
