[Lang Shining Emperor Qianlong’s Great Picture Reading Axis]
Emperor Qianlong’s Great Picture Reading Axis, painted by Lang Shining during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, silk version, colored, 332.5 cm vertically and 232 cm horizontally
This painting is not printed by the author. According to the style of the painting, it is undoubtedly the real painting of Lang Shining
In the fourth year of Qianlong’s reign (1739), Emperor Hongli personally visited Nanyuan to review the formation of the Eight Banner Army and the training activities of various weapons and firearms. Qianlong reviewed it once every three years to strengthen the army and boost morale
This is a military portrait of Hongli at the age of 29. It is also a masterpiece of Lang Shining. But at this time, the painter is still in the learning stage of traditional Chinese painting, and the performance techniques in the picture are basically using traditional Chinese painting tools and materials to achieve the artistic effect of western fine brush oil painting. The author weakens his sketching techniques for scenery and horses, and deals with light and dark with flat light. The lines are almost hidden by color after playing the role of contour lines. The painting methods of clouds in the sky are all from Western France. The grass leaves in the close shot are close to the still life painting in the west. Only the structure of the distant mountains retains some procedures of the realistic landscape painting in the Qing Palace.
