This is a high-quality running script created by Wang Duo at the age of 59. The work is excerpted from the book “Xiang De Tie” (see Volume II of “Chunhua Pavilion Tie”) by Wang Yan of the Eastern Jin Dynasty
Wang Duo studied books based on copying the ancients, especially worshipping the two kings. He believed that “the books did not belong to the Jin Dynasty, but eventually entered the wild way.” He was diligent in copying, and his skillful skills could reach the position of “unafraid”, but following the ancients was not his ultimate goal, but the foundation of his artistic creation. Wang Duo once said, “It is difficult to enter calligraphy at the beginning, and then it is difficult to publish calligraphy. For the ancient calligraphy, he often did not focus on the content, but relied on the text of the ancient calligraphy, aiming to grasp and pursue the traditional spirit of the ancients, so he often took the ancient calligraphy and wrote it, or mixed it together. In addition to the post text, the calligraphy style is not deliberately imitated, but is used to create a personalized style. For example, Wang Duo used to write in regular script, but Wang Duo wrote in cursive script, showcasing his artistic achievements in his later years, and making the best interpretation of his “entering” and “leaving”.
