Rhinoceros Horn Carved Orchid Pavilion Scenery Cup, 37.4 cm in height and 17.8 cm in diameter
The cup is carved from African rhinoceros horn and is huge. The outer wall adopts a spiral composition, and the theme pattern is based on the story of Wang Xizhi and others having a banquet at Lanting in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. The scene is depicted according to Wang Xizhi’s “Lanting Preface”. From the bottom to the top, 23 figures with different postures are carved, surrounded by mountains, lush forests and bamboo, small bridges and pavilions, and white geese in Qushui. The mouth is carved with auspicious cloud dragon pattern
The upper part of the cup is mainly embossed on the inner and outer walls, while the lower part is purely carved. The knife technique is broad and powerful, the patterns are layered, and the three-dimensional sense is strong
