Red sandalwood carving pen holder of Huichang Jiulaotu has a height of 19 cm, a diameter of 14 cm and a bottom diameter of 16 cm
The rim of the pen holder is inlaid with silver wire and chrysanthemum patterns, the mother-of-pearl inlaid with lion patterns and grape patterns near the mouth, and the outer wall is carved with the “Huichang Jiulao Tu”. The base is like a rock, echoing the scene of the cylinder. The mural depicts the scene of nine literati including Bai Juyi having a banquet at the Longmen Xiangshan Temple in Luoyang during the reign of Huichang in the Tang Dynasty (841-846)
This device is mainly made of high relief and round carving. The knife method is slightly quick and sharp, the grinding is slightly sloppy, and the mother-of-pearl decoration is relatively thick. Its modeling design, pattern carving, etc. all have a distinctive style of red sandalwood carving in the Ming Dynasty.
