Atlas of the Western Garden of the Ming Dynasty

[Atlas of the Western Garden of the Ming Dynasty]

Silk, colored. 28.3 cm vertically and 214 cm horizontally

This picture has no print, and the tail paper has Zhang Fengyi and Ge Yingdian’s book “Atlas of the Western Garden”

This picture is based on the “Atlas of the Western Garden”, which was written by the Southern Song people in the name of Mi Fu. It depicts the scene that Wang Shen of the Northern Song Dynasty invited Su Shi, Su Zhe, Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu, Li Gonglin, Qin Guan, Liu Jing and other scholars to gather in the Western Garden. In the picture, people either raise their pens and brush their hair, refresh their calligraphy, drink tea to refresh their spirits, gather to talk about Zen, or happily dial Ruan to reward their bosom friends. Although it was a fictional literary meeting, it was repeatedly portrayed by later painters and became a different display of literati yearning for elegant life
