Commentary on “Farewell Wang Yuanqi Poem”
Paragraph: “Jinan Xingdong”. Seal “son wishes father” and “born in Jinan”. The collection seals are “Nanpi Zhang’s authentic collection”, “Tongshou’s collection”, “Xiang Shijie’s seal”, and “Chang Wan’s”
This is three five-character metrical poems written by Xing Dong for the south trip of Wang Yuanqi
The calligraphy of “Farewell to Wang Yuanqi Poem” is mellow and beautiful, as commented by Tao Zongyi of the Ming Dynasty in “The History of Calligraphy”: “The strokes are vigorous and round and can be turned.” Xing Dong’s calligraphy master Wang Chong, who was the first master of calligraphy, followed up the Wei and Jin dynasties, especially worshipped Wang Xizhi, and thought that Wang Xizhi was “outstanding as the crown of calligraphers for thousands of years”, so he was keen to copy it. Among his surviving calligraphic works, the works of Lin Wang Tie account for a large proportion. This book is not only beautiful and vivid in Wang Xizhi’s style, but also simple in Wang Chong’s style.
